But I didn’t say fudge. Just had to shovel 3" of snow off my entire driveway, patio, and sidewalks by hand in -14 wind chill.
2/10, luckily the snow was light and fluffy.
I’ve never replaced a pull start. How much of a headache am I in for?

Don’t bother, call TORO and tell them it didn’t start per their Guarantee

Haha!
I can’t complain about the machine actually. My dad garbage picked it for me a few years ago. It even started first pull this season.

I’ve replaced a couple of generator cords (a DeWalt and a Centurion, I think). Not too bad of a job.
Gotta be careful to wind the spring back up enough turns, though. Otherwise, the loose handle just kind of dangles there and you have to take it off again.

Can’t speak for this exact machine but usually they’re not too bad, as long as you don’t have to rewind a spring, but if you do have to rewind it.... sproing and fuck are two words that come to mind, over and over and over again.

Did string break?
There were some genarators at work where I had to field repair them by making the string shorter.
It’s doable. I would go buy a string first. Some auto parts stores may have a generic string replacement kid.
The key is to get string wound and spring under tension so when you pull it goes back.

What about that electric start.
I am about to go plow my yard on my side by side.
It’s about -37 windchill right now....
But i’m going to put on my snowmobile suit, without the helmet.
I’ll be out for more than 1 hour.
I changed the rope on my 8hp blower 3 times so far since the early 90s.
Now it’s my backup solution

it’s easier than working on cars because you’re actually bigger than it is, you can get to every part of it, and you can take the entire bleeding apparatus into your workshop or put it on the kitchen table.
What the others said about the spring. Biggest challenge is tediousness
Best wishes with it

It’s been said a few times, but I’ll echo it: Getting to the pull start should be easy, and the entire assembly should come off as one unit. If you can get to the cord without having to release spring pressure, that’s ideal. (Local hardware store may have the right cord if you wanna replace it all. I figure better to do it once and do it right, as the cord is probably wearing.)
If you have to release the spring...sorry. It’s gonna be a long, sweary afternoon. I spent a good afternoon lowering the tone at a friend’s marina trying to fix the pull start on his sailboat’s outboard engine.

Yeah, I definitely want to replace the cord and do it right. I don’t want this crap happening again when there’s 6" of wet slop on the ground.

That’s always been non operational since I got the machine (garbage picked it a few years ago). I may try and fix that as well when I fix the pull cord.

The string broke and the rest of it got sucked into the machine. I need to strip the whole case off to get to it.

I had a mower where the recoil starter was all one self contained unit. Four screws, remove the old one and install the new one. I also started it with a drill once, which I do NOT recommend.

I bought normal rope when I replaced the pull rope, since replacement pull rope is like 10x the price as same gauge normal rope.
You might not get it right on the first try.
